ACT 5
SCENE 1
- Q: "Imperious Caesar, dead, and turn'd to clay" - Hamlet
- The priest refuses to give Ophelia a religious burial because he thinks her death is caused by her committing suicide
- This shows that even the priest does not know whether her death was accidental or on purpose
- He is confused by reality and appearance
SCENE 2
- Hamlet rewrites a letter the King of England to order him to execute Rosencrantz & Guilderstern
- Rosencrantz & Guilderstern's act of being nice to everyone has failed
- They tried to appear concerned about Hamlet but in reality Hamlet knew the whole time that Claudius ordered them to spy on him
- They continued to lie to Hamlet thinking they can get away with it
- At the end, Hamlet found out their lie and they ended up dead
- Q: "Not a whit, we defy augury: there's a special" - Hamlet
- Claudius drops the jewel into the drink
- It appears to be an innocent jewel but in reality it is poisoned
- Q: "It is poison'd cup: it is too late" - Claudius
- Q: "I can no more: the king, the king's to blame" - Laertes
- Before their death, Laertes and Hamlet forgive each other
- Shows that they accept reality and are honest with each other
- Q: "To tell my story" - Hamlet
- Fortinbras is now crowned Prince of Denmark and everything is back in order
- All the lies and "appearances" are faded away and only truth and reality is spread across Denmark
