Polonius asks his servant, Reynaldo, to spy on Laertes in Paris
Asks Reynaldo to speak poorly about Laertes to discover how people truly think and feel about him
Shows that Polonius does not trust his son
Ophelia enters and is upset after seeing Hamlet
Polonius thinks that Hamlet is acting strange because he is in love with Opehlia
He decides to tell Claudius
SCENE 2
Claudius asks Hamlet's friends, Rosencrantz & Guildersternz, to spy on Hamlet to find our his cause of madness
Gertrude believes that Hamlet's cause of madness is due to quick remarriage and the death of King Hamlet
Polonius proposes the idea that Hamlet's mad because of the love he has for Ophelia and offers his own daughter to help him spy on Hamlet
Claudius and Gertrude both agree and Polonius meets with Hamlet
Hamlet appears to be mad (by making fun of him) but Polonius falls for what Hamlet says to be true. He confirms that Hamlet is in fact mad.
Hamlet meets Rosencrantz and Guildersternz outside and Hamlet realizes that his friends were sent to spy on him
Rosencrantz & Guildersternz tells Hamlet that there are actors arriving
Hamlet becomes excited and asks the actor to give a speech from
Virgil's
Aeneid
Hamlet expresses his second soliloquy
Shows us that he feels like a coward but he wants to act and avenge his father
He decides to use the players to reveal the truth (with the play of The Murder of Gonzago)
